Hello! My name is Irina and usually I’m the one taking interviews from EVS volunteers in Estonia, because I volunteer in the office of ESTYES, but today I want to write a little about my own experience in Estonia and about my EVS here.
So, as I said, I’m Irina, I’m 25 years old and I came to Estonia for EVS for 11 months in February 2016 from Nizhny Novgorod, Russia (my city is 5th biggest in Russia but it’s not a problem if you never heard about it before). I’m doing my service in the office of organization which is dealing with international volunteering projects and my main task is to spread information about these programs among Estonian youth. Since my native language is Russian, my special focus is Russian-speaking youth of Estonia and Tallinn in particular.
Why Estonia? Many people are asking. When you have in front of you so many more “interesting” countries of Europe with warm sea, mountains, fascinating things to do.. I always say – you shouldn’t choose your project based on the country, you should choose your project based on what you want to do there. You may wake up every day in a country you dreamt about, where the sun is shining, warm nice sea is just around the corner and there’s never rain… and drag yourself to work which you don’t like or even hate – how does this scenario look to you? Doesn’t look good to me.
Since 2009, the first time when I got involved into international volunteering project, I first had it as a hobby and since 2011 it has become my job – back in Russia I was coordinating European Voluntary Service projects myself in organization called SFERA Movement. I’m devoted to it so much – and I can’t imagine my life without it anymore. I also want as many people as possible to learn about this and participate and understand all the benefits of volunteering abroad and non-formal education in general. This project is very important for me also because I want to see EVS from the other side – I have always been coordinator, now I’m a volunteer and the picture is completely different. My brain turned a little upside down but this is a very good learning process
As I mentioned, you should choose your project not based on the country, but based on the work you will do. However, the country you choose should be of sympathy to you too – and I have to say, for me Estonia is more than just a sympathy by now Before I have been here 2 times, and every time I felt very… comfortable. I felt like it’s easier to breathe here for me or something. Second time when I came to Tallinn in 2015 I had opportunity to stay about one week and I realized that this seemingly small city offers so much to do and see, that I would definitely want to try to live here for longer and experience it to the full. And so the opportunity presented itself – vacancy in ESTYES got open and I thought that this would be perfect combination – promotion of international volunteering in the city which I like!
So, ever since I have been here, I’m establishing contacts with schools where I can talk about volunteering abroad, meeting young people and working with them on topics of intercultural communication and breaking stereotypes. I have to say, that when I came here I was positively surprised by the openness of teachers and huvijuhts in Estonian schools – they were ready to provide me with time and space for running presentations and workshops, they were ready to incorporate elements of non-formal education into their formal system and share this information with their children. I’m also representing ESTYES at fairs for young people about opportunities of going abroad or volunteering.

To promote our projects, I also did some events – like International volunteering quest for example and language meetups “Solyanka”. If you want to practice your language skills in non-formal atmosphere, to meet EVS volunteers who are hosted here in Tallinn, and just to have very nice time, you’re welcome to our meetings – we’re still planning 2 more in November and December. In November it will be on Thursday 17th – so please stay tuned with our FB page!
As almost any EVS volunteer does, I did cultural night of my country – and we combined it with another volunteer from Belarus, having prepared Russian-Belarussian country presentation.
During summer I had opportunity to take part in workcamps held by ESTYES as a leader – first in Tallinn zoo, and second time – with support of Estonian nature fund in Pivarootsi and magical Osmussare island. Also I run several workshops for young people in our camps and I hope that they liked their camp even more because of them

All in all, volunteer in the office has freedom in what he or she is doing and at the same time should always be proactive, offering ideas and projects. So, if you don’t think that this type of work, when you have to be a fountain of ideas – is for you, choose a project where there’re many regular activities – kindergarten, house for disabled or elderly people, etc.
If you ask me about Estonia, I will tell you that this is fascinating country and your capital is amazing city to live in. Please appreciate what you have – nature, so beautiful and well taken care of; people, polite and nice; infrastructure, allowing you to travel easily; traditions and culture which you keep up so thoroughly through your songs and dancing. I traveled quite a lot around Estonia and there’re so many beautiful places, sometimes I couldn’t believe my eyes!

In the end of my project (in December) I would like to make event (mostly for local people) where I will talk about things which amaze me here most and you’re welcome to that – just follow our FB page! Until then, if you have any idea about promotion of volunteering – let me know, my address is irina@estyes.ee.
I’m also writing a blog and if you speak Russian or are ready to to Google translate – you’re welcome to read it here.
